Thanks to new lighting provided by the Urban Enterprise Association (UEA), several key city walkways and driving lanes are now much safer for pedestrians and motorists.

The City’s Public Works division recently installed energy efficient and high-performance LED lighting along the Anthony Boulevard underpass driving lanes. LED’s offer superior light quality and are proven to help viewers see objects more clearly and to discern colors more easily. The LED lights along Anthony are resulting in a 64.3 percent reduction in energy consumed, saving money and the environment.

In addition to the Anthony Boulevard underpass improvements, new LED lighting has been installed at the Fletcher Avenue and Lumbard Street railroad crossings. The new lights will again improve safety and save money. Additionally, the lights should not need any maintenance for at least 20 years.

Finally, the UEA has also paid for lighting improvements to the Hanna Street railroad underpass walkways and driving lanes. Previously, the walkways had no lighting and the driving lanes were lit with outdated and inefficient High Pressure Sodium lights. Now, both the Hanna Street walkways and driving lanes are safer and more efficient.

The UEA invested approximately $30,000 in these lighting updates in the core of Fort Wayne. The UEA debuted in 1984 with a revitalization plan to breathe new life and energy into Fort Wayne’s industrial core. The UEA’s holistic approach to urban renewal has fortified the four-square-mile Urban Enterprise Zone by fostering growth of new and established businesses, creating and retaining jobs, making physical improvements, and enhancing the well-being of area residents.
