In an effort to encourage active living, the City of Fort Wayne is sponsoring Active Commute Fridays throughout the summer, with free breakfast the third Friday of the month.

The next free breakfast is Friday, August 17 from 6:30 – 8:30 a.m. in front of the Ash Skyline YMCA on Harrison Street. Coffee, baked goods and fruit are provided by Parkview Trauma, Pembroke Bakery, Starbucks and Meijer.

For residents wanting to ride with a group, commuter groups will leave Rockhill Park by the parking lot off of Catalpa Street and Foster Park by the baseball diamonds on Hartman Road by 7 a.m. There is also a commuter group that will leave Johnny Appleseed Park at the parking lot near Coliseum Boulevard at 7:20 a.m.

The City and its partners are challenging residents to make 20 active commutes this summer by leaving their car at home and either walking or biking to work. Anyone with questions should call Amy Hartzog at 260-427-6228 or email her at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Active Commute Fridays are part of the City’s comprehensive plan to support active transportation, specifically biking. More people using bikes for transportation helps reduce traffic congestion on City streets, improves air quality and keeps bike riders healthy. Additionally, studies show that more people are attracted to communities with good bike infrastructure that can be used for commuting as well as recreation. Learn more at www.BikeFortWayne.org.
