City announces Starbucks location to open at Southtown Centre

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Mayor Tom Henry today announced a Starbucks is one of two new developments planned for southeast Fort Wayne. The City of Fort Wayne’s Community Development Division, in partnership with The Elia Group, a Michigan-based real estate developer, closed on two land sales at Southtown Centre making way for continued revitalization of the area.

The Elia Group, based in Birmingham, Michigan, plans to build two commercial buildings on the property located along U.S. 27. The project will consist of a 2,225 square foot building that will be leased by Starbucks as its only tenant. The second proposed building, located to the east, is still in the planning stages but is expected to be a general retail use of approximately 5,000 square feet.

City gives more than $170,000 for neighborhood improvement projects

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The City of Fort Wayne’s Neighborhood Planning and Activation Workgroup announced today that 38 neighborhood associations are being awarded grants totaling more than $170,000 to support community led projects. These projects range from new landscaping in common areas to replacing neighborhood signage.

Any registered Fort Wayne neighborhood association could apply to receive up to $5,000 in reimbursable grant funds. The program, run by the City’s Community Development Division, is designed to support neighborhood beautification efforts and strengthen involvement from neighbors.

Unique development planned for downtown through partnership between Surack Enterprises and City of Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The City of Fort Wayne’s Community Development Division is partnering with Sweetwater founder Chuck Surack and Lisa Surack, now of Surack Enterprises, to bring more development to the downtown area.

The project, known as “The Pearl,” will be an investment of nearly $50 million by the Suracks. It is anticipated to include a seven-story mixed-use building with more than 35,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial and event space, 92 structured parking spaces for residents, five “first of its kind” live/work units and approximately 76 dwelling units on upper floors.

City seeking input on plan to address homelessness

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The City of Fort Wayne’s Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services has drafted a plan to use more than $4 million in federal funding to address homelessness with the help of Fort Wayne residents.

Now, residents are invited to share their thoughts on the proposed DRAFT Allocation Plan. Public comment is open to everyone who lives in Fort Wayne and can be submitted here through an online survey. The survey is available through March 3, 2022. The City will hold a virtual public hearing to discuss the plan on Wednesday February 16th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Residents may register for the meeting here.

City announces further development of The Landing

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Mayor Tom Henry announced today that the City of Fort Wayne’s Community Development Division, in partnership with the Cincinnati-based company Model Group, will continue the revitalization of The Landing. This area is one of the most historically significant neighborhoods in Fort Wayne.

The $11.9 million project includes the historic preservation of three signature buildings on West Columbia Street, as well as new infill construction on two empty lots. Columbia Street West Bar and Grill, located at 135 West Columbia Street, and the upper floors of the building that houses Nawa, located across the street at 126 West Columbia Street, will be renovated. There will be new building construction behind Columbia Street West Bar and Grill and along a portion of the east side of the building.

City seeking input for allocation of funding to address homelessness

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The City of Fort Wayne’s Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services has received more than $4 million in federal funding to address homelessness. Now, the City, in collaboration with the nationally-recognized consulting firm Homebase, is seeking public input on the best way for the City to spend those dollars.

Residents can share their thoughts and ideas through an online questionnaire found here. The questionnaire is open to everyone in the City of Fort Wayne and should take roughly 10 minutes to complete.  The input will help the City develop a proposed Allocation Plan.

Dr. Matthew Desmond named keynote speaker of Fair Housing Summit

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The City of Fort Wayne Metropolitan Human Relations Commission announced today that Pulitzer Prize winner Dr. Matthew Desmond will be the keynote speaker for the 2022 Fair Housing Summit. Desmond’s best seller Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City has effectively changed the understanding of inequity and economic exploitation in America.

City of Fort Wayne asks for Community Feedback on New Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monument

Fort Wayne, Ind.- In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Fort Wayne residents have the opportunity to provide input on which phrases from Dr. King’s speech in Fort Wayne on June 5, 1963 resonate most with them. Their votes will support the development of Pillars of Hope and Justice a monument honoring the 60th anniversary of Dr. King’s visit to Fort Wayne by RE:site. The monument will be placed at the southeast corner of the USF Performing Arts Center parking area at 420 West Berry St. where the speech was given.

City partners with the Packard Area Planning Alliance to host open house series

Fort Wayne, Ind. - The City of Fort Wayne’s Community Development Division in collaboration with the Packard Area Planning Alliance (PAPA) will host a series of open house events at Wunderkammer Company beginning January 10th.

These events will be an opportunity for residents and business owners review and provide feedback on proposed goals, policies, and action steps related to the new Packard 2030 Neighborhood Plan, which is scheduled for completion by summer 2022. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
