Fort Wayne Public Art Commission to dedicate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. monument June 5

Fort Wayne, Ind. – On June 5, the Fort Wayne Public Art Commission will unveil Pillars of Hope and Justice, a public art monument in downtown Fort Wayne.

Designed by artists Shane Allbritton and Norman Lee with RE:site Studio, the monument commemorates the June 5, 1963 visit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Fort Wayne, during which he gave a speech at the former Scottish Rite Auditorium sharing his vision for nonviolent resistance. King’s Fort Wayne speech was part of a critical sequence of speeches from “Letter from Birmingham Jail” on April 16, 1963 to “The Great March to Freedom” on June 23, 1963 to “I Have a Dream” on the National Mall on August 28, 1963. Because a complete, fully recorded version of his speech was not known to exist, the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society collected, assembled and ordered all documented remarks, as repeated in area newspapers.

Packard 2030 Neighborhood Plan Adopted

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The City of Fort Wayne’s Neighborhood Planning and Activation Workgroup and the Packard Area Planning Alliance celebrate the adoption of the Packard 2030 Neighborhood Plan, which outlines recommendations and strategies for future development in the community.

The plan addresses topics expressed by residents through community engagement, including economic development, housing, historic preservation, infrastructure, parks and recreation, public safety, zoning and land use, and neighborhood development. At the heart of Packard 2030 was a robust stakeholder and engagement process, where nearly 1,500 interactions with residents, businesses, and stakeholders helped shape goals, strategies, and action steps to enhance the quality of life for neighborhoods in the Packard Area Planning Alliance.

City of Fort Wayne celebrates Historic Preservation Month

Fort Wayne, Ind.- The City of Fort Wayne is celebrating National Historic Preservation Month throughout the month of May.

To promote and commemorate the month, the City’s Community Development Division will share facts and photos about historic buildings, districts, and places across the City via social media posts on the Fort Wayne Neighborhoods Facebook page. The division also encourages residents to share current photos of historic buildings or culturally significant places that are at least 50 years old. Share your photo, location, and a brief statement as to why the building or place is important to you on your social media accounts using the hashtag #HPFW23. The photo submission deadline is May 31. All participants will have their names submitted for a drawing to win a private tour of the Allen County Courthouse or four tickets to a 2023 Fort Wayne TinCaps game.

City hosts 2023 Fair Housing Summit

April 26, 2023 - The City of Fort Wayne’s Metropolitan Human Relations Commission and the City of Fort Wayne’s Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services today hosted the 2023 Fair Housing Summit at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum Conference Center, 4000 Parnell Ave.

The annual event featured keynote speaker Dr. Andre M. Perry, author of Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives & Property in Americas Black Cities and coauthor of the groundbreaking 2018 Brookings Institution report The Devaluation of Assets in Black Neighborhoods. Dr. Perry is a nationally known and respected commentator on race, structural inequality, education, and economic inclusion.

City awards record number of neighborhood improvement grant projects

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Mayor Tom Henry and the City of Fort Wayne’s Neighborhood Planning and Activation Workgroup announced today that a record 47 neighborhood improvement grant projects are being awarded, totaling more than $200,000. These projects range from new landscaping in common areas to replacing neighborhood signage.

The announcement was held at Adams Elementary School on New Haven Avenue in the Harvester Neighborhood. Harvester is using their grant to install creative artistic crosswalks, ‘the JET-Way’ (school mascot), that promotes safety and connects students from the elementary school to nearby McCormick Park. Gret Machlan, Harvester Neighborhood President, Misty Zent, Harvester Neighborhood Vice President, and Allison Holland, Adams Elementary School’s principal, were at the announcement to celebrate the Neighborhood Improvement Grant program.

General Electric Fort Wayne Electric Works Historic District Now Listed in National Register of Historic Places

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The former General Electric plant, now known as Electric Works, has been included on the National Register of Historic Places, the nation’s official list of properties considered worthy of preservation.

The General Electric Fort Wayne Electric Works Historic District is located immediately southwest of downtown along the Broadway corridor. It is a 15-acre complex that contains 22 buildings. It is composed of both the newly opened Electric Works, and the “East Campus” which is planned for future historic rehabilitation and adaptive reuse.

City to host leadership neighborhood conference

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Mayor Tom Henry and the Community Development Division’s Neighborhood Planning and Activation Work Group today announced that September 14 will be the date for the City of Fort Wayne’s annual Inspire Leadership Neighborhood Conference.

The goal of the conference is to energize and equip residents with the tools they need to continue doing great work in our community. The event will be free and lunch will be provided for all registered Fort Wayne residents, but space will be limited. Pre-registration will be required. Further registration details, including location and keynote announcements, will be provided later this spring.

City holds groundbreaking ceremony for The Lofts at Headwaters Park

April 11, 2023 - Mayor Tom Henry, the City of Fort Wayne’s Community Development Division, and developer Barrett & Stokely today held an official groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate construction that began last week. The Lofts at Headwaters Park is a $98 million mixed-use development project located at the northeast corner of Clinton and Superior streets.

March 30, 2023 - Mayor Tom Henry, the City of Fort Wayne’s Community Development Division and developer Barrett & Stokely announced today that the developer will soon begin construction of the $98 million mixed-use development at the northeast corner of Clinton and Superior streets known as The Lofts at Headwaters Park.
